MPTC Urban Ring Road:
The Country’s First Large-Scale Interconnected Expressway Network
by Junne Grajales
MPTC is building the Urban Ring Road, a rapid, quality standard network of roads that will connect the north, south, east, and west of Metro Manila. “That’s why we call it the ‘MPTC Urban Ring Road,’ as it is designed to improve circulation and assure unimpeded traffic flow,” said Sir Rod Franco, MPTC President and CEO.

Apart from NLEX’s elevated C-5 Expressway and the elevated NLEX Harbor Link-Port Area section, these two other projects complete the country’s first extensive expressway connection:
- The CAVITEX C-5 South Link will connect C-5 Road to CAVITEX and will lessen the one-hour travel time to 10 minutes.
- The NLEX-CAVITEX Port Link Expressway will connect CAVITEX to CALAX, NAIA Expressway, and SLEX.

“It is designed to put order in urban transport. The economic losses of city traffic are enormous. We’d like to help manage it, and this is our contribution,” added Sir Rod.
The project will link the capital through the interconnected expressways which will include a “ring around the metropolis” for easy travel. It will ease congestion in local roads and strengthen the road system through differentiating local in-city journeys from inter-city to inter-regional trips.
