KUDOS! NLEX Culminated the ESH 5Ks, Demonstrating ISO Excellence

BALINTAWAK, Caloocan City, NLEX Corporation culminated its month-long event, ESH 5Ks, last May 30. The Compliance and Business Excellence (CBE) Department has successfully conducted the Karangalan, a ceremony awarding the winners of the roster of events. The 5Ks, which stand for Kaligtasan, Kalusugan, Kalsada, Kalasag, and Kalikasan, comprise multiple action-packed, informative, and exciting events aligned with the organization’s hard-earned ISO management systems.

NLEX Corporation – Compliance and Business Excellence (CBE) Department

First on the list is the Riddle Safety Quiz and Scavenger Hunt. In parallel with the World Safety Day, with the theme “Revolutionizing Safety AI and Digitalization,” this game commenced for the Kaligtasan. It was a fun and mind-bending game when the employees had to solve riddles incorporating items related to Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) and hunt for them to scan the QR code to win. It was a successful 5-day challenging game.

During the Kalasag, the ERT Olympics took place. ERT Olympics in its second year was once again a success. It aims to enhance and evaluate the competencies of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) members.  Teams from OMC, ODB, TOCB, and Toll Operations participated. This event consisted of four (4) obstacle courses, including the donning and doffing of a fireman’s suit and SCBA, hose throw and retrieval, fireman’s carry, use of a fire extinguisher, and water relay. The Bureau of Fire Protection – Caloocan Office was also in attendance to assess ERT’s overall performance.

For the Kalusugan, a podcast occurred in celebration of World Health Awareness Month. CBE introduced an educational live podcast with a discourse about Smoking Cessation and General Health Education on Alcohol Use. They were joined by a Health Program Officer from the Department of Health – Disease Prevention and Control Bureau (DOH-DPCB), Mr. Bryan Kenneth C. Medina, MOH, RPh. To make it more personal and relatable, Mr. Christopher Balajadia – Supervisor of Telecom and Network, shared his insights and experiences.

IRT Olympics was launched in alignment with Kalsada to test the readiness of Incident Response Teams (IRT). Seven (7) teams from Traffic Operations joined the event, demonstrating their competency and agility in doing their response to motorists.

Consists of three (3) phases, including patrol vehicle (PV) checking, intervention protocol, and report writing, the IRT Olympics have assessed participating teams by checking the fastest and most accurate in performing their procedures.

Another event for Kalsada, the TSF Safety Booth and Campaign Contest, was once again accomplished. With the theme, “Promoting Child Road Safety,” Toll Service Facilities or TSF across the stretch of NLEX and SCTEX have competed in this contest to exhibit their eco-friendly and informative booths advocating road safety for children.

Seven (7) TSFs displayed their unique designs. KM 23 – Petron Marilao Northbound, KM 32 – Shell Burol Northbound, KM 17 – Phoenix Drive and Dine Southbound, KM 29 – Petron Bocaue Southbound, KM 71 Petron Lakeshore Northbound, KM 76 – Shell Mexico Southbound, and KM 102 – Seaoil SCTEX were the participants of this event.

The finalists of the design contest were evaluated by esteemed judges: Ms. Aileen M. Gonzales from the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB), Atty. Cynthia G. Casino of Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), Ms. Mary Ann B. Tolentino from Corporate Communication at NLEX Corporation, and Mr. Viktor Rey L. Apuzen from Project Development at NLEX Corporation.

  • KM 17 – Phoenix Drive & Dine Southbound (Champion)
  • KM 71 Petron Lakeshore Northbound (1st Runner-Up)
  • KM 76 – Shell Mexico Southbound (2nd Runner-Up)

Another event under Kalsada was the MRS for Community & Schools. A motorcycle riding safety or MRS was executed at the City Malabon Polytechnic Institute (CMPI) as part of the 5KS celebration.

The CBE, with the help of Communication and Stakeholders Management (CSM), successfully held this program to strengthen the awareness of sixty (60) motorcycle riders, aligning with the United Nations Road Safety theme for safer streets involving road users. It was a learning experience for participants featuring lectures and demonstrations focused on motorcycle safety.

Making an impactful debut program for Kalikasan was the KALIKASAN Roadshow. With a theme, Trash Talk: Turning Waste into Worth with Zero Waste Living, a discussion was held to highlight the practices attaining zero waste through the 5R principle: reuse, recycle, repurpose, reduce, and refuse.

The discussion was joined by two (2) personalities from renowned institutions for the environment.  Mr. Gio Cabuntocan from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) and Ms. Madelaine Bosquillos of Zero Waste Philippines.

Also, for Kalikasan is an upcoming video-making contest that was also explained during the roadshow. This event will highlight the proper waste management and energy conservation, and efficiency of the company.

The ESH 5Ks event was an overall success, standing as a testament to the company’s unwavering commitment to excellence and adherence to its ISO management systems. This event was a reprisal program of Compliance and Business Excellence (CBE) from last year’s ESH Week.
