Promoting Safer Roads for Children – Opening of RTS Hub and Park

By Len Jorge

Many lives are at stake when you are on the road and teaching children at an early age the importance of road traffic safety ensures the safety of the next generation. Children are the most vulnerable when it comes to road traffic because they are limited by their physical, attention, and social development. Because they are small, it can be hard for motorists to see them on the road. And it can be difficult for children to see the surrounding traffic.

Road crashes are a major cause of death and injury among the young, so practicing road traffic safety is important to ensure the safety of the driver, passengers, and pedestrians. As traffic increases every year, it is vital to teach children the methods and precautions in place to ensure they behave safely around roads.

We at NLEX are dedicated to ensuring the importance of road traffic safety to the public, especially to children. It is of paramount importance to us to strengthen our commitment to road traffic safety. With this, together with our partners from the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Imagine Law, Toll Regulatory Board (TRB), Metro-Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC), University of the Philippines – National Center for Transportation Studies (UP-NCTS), and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) – Philippines, we formally opened the Road Traffic Safety Hub and Park (RTS Hub and Park) last 31 January 2024. We invited the students and faculty members from the EPZA Resettlement Elementary School in Angeles, Pampanga.

The RTS hub is an educational facility that focuses on teaching children the importance of road traffic safety. It also teaches children to embrace awareness, engagement, and behavior when on the road.

The event started with a tree-planting ceremony. The planting ceremony symbolizes the five pillars of road traffic safety, five ISO certifications, and five I-CARE values. It also signifies NLEX’s strong commitment to continually improve and promote safer roads.

The RTS Hub and Park bases its structure on a central theme – Road Traffic Safety. It features multiple areas each representing the five pillars. The outdoor ground is converted into a mini road with pedestrian and traffic signs to educate children about how to be safe on the road. The park also has bicycles and mini battery-operated cars for children to enjoy.

The park also offers orientations and photo opportunities that allow guests to capture the importance of road traffic safety in a unique and special way.
