Moving Forward Together, the NLEX Way

by Sam Escolano

“…but it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”
– Rocky Balboa

Rocky’s key philosophy quoted above not only serves as an inspirational quote, it also serves as a testimony to the resilience that Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation and NLEX Corporation have in continuing to move forward together amidst uncertainties, as was shown in the Build As One 2020 Virtual MPTC Management Conference.

True to this testimony, the two corporations were able to achieve three milestones in moving forward together this September: MPTC’s first Build As One Virtual Management Conference, NLEX Corporation’s first virtual Annual Strategic Planning Conference, and the continued certification of NLEX Corporation’s Integrated Management System.

Build As One 2020 Virtual MPTC Management Conference

The Build As One (BAO) is MPTC’s yearly management conference where the strategy of the MPTC group is presented and discussed, with themes relevant to the strategy packaged in talks by highly-regarded key speakers.

Held on August 27 to 28, 2020, this year’s BAO focused on the theme “Re-Ignite. Re-Energize. Rise Up.” This year’s BAO marks the first digital management conference held through Zoom. It featured a slew of special guests – led by MPIC Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan and MPIC Executive Director, President, and Chief Executive Officer Jose Maria K. Lim – discussed the MPIC group’s strategies to move forward despite the setbacks that they faced due to the pandemic, and MPTC’s role in the strategy.

Union Bank’s Chairman Tito Ortiz discussed how innovations were devised and implemented through Union Bank’s culture. Department of Finance Assistant Secretary Tony Lambino, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, and BCDA President and CEO Vince Dizon showed how the government responded in containing and addressing COVID-19.

NLEX Annual Strategic Planning Conference

The NLEX Annual Strategic Planning Conference is a two-day event where NLEX Corporation and its departments discuss their intended strategies for the following year and its corresponding budget.

This year’s NLEX Strategic Planning Conference shifted from a physical conference to a digital one.

Not one to back out from the challenge to move forward together, two changes were introduced in this year’s strategic planning conference: one is the shift from a physical conference to a digital one, and the other is that presentations were grouped according to their customer value propositions. These resulted in the conference being held for only a day and yet rich in content. Activities held through Zoom showed how our host, the Finance Team, managed and innovated to make the conference cross the digital barrier for it to be as interactive as possible.

Our President and General Manager, J. Luigi L. Bautista, closed the conference by encouraging NLEX leaders to achieve a whole new level of performance as they move forward together.

IMS Continued Certification

Conferences were not only the ones digitalized – even our bid for continued certification for our Integrated Management System was.

NLEX Corporation achieved continued certification as it successfully showed compliance to the IMS Standards through online interviews with our external auditor, DQS Certification Philippines, Inc.

The IMS Remote Surveillance Audit was held last September 17 to 18, 2020, where our external auditor, DQS Certification Philippines, Inc. reviewed our company’s compliance to the three ISO standards we are subscribed to, composed of ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management Systems), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management Systems), and ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems). Interviews with the process owners were held through Zoom.

NLEX Corporation’s IMS audit was truly successful with no listed non-conformances, showing that it is fully compliant with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018.

These three milestones in the past months show that despite how hard we get hit externally, NLEX Corporation will keep on moving forward. Truly, a corporation of winners.
