NORTHLINK: How do you keep your cool?

When I was asked to share my thoughts about this topic, my first thought was, “Why me? I’m not always the ‘cool’ one, you know?” If you ask my team to pick an emoji to describe me, they will probably give you this: 🙄.
That being said, here are some things I always keep in mind when faced with a problem, especially when dealing with a crisis.
First, do not panic. In high-pressure situations, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the emotions, personalities, and noise surrounding the issue. This reaction often leads to impulsive decisions that may make the situation worse. Instead, take a few deep breaths to center yourself. Focusing on your breath or grounding yourself in the present moment creates a vital space between the emotions and your response. This pause allows you to choose a measured reaction instead of a knee-jerk one, helping you to approach the problem with a clearer mind and a more composed demeanor.
Second, identify the problem. Understanding the core issue at hand is crucial for effective resolution. Take a moment to analyze who is affected by the situation. Is it just you, or does it involve colleagues, customers, regulators, and family? By mapping out the stakeholders and their respective concerns, you can gain a more comprehensive view of the impact. “Zoom out” or look at the big picture instead of focusing on small details. This can come later.
Lastly, develop solutions based on what is immediately actionable. Encourage open communication because this collaborative approach not only helps to diffuse tension but also fosters a sense of teamwork and shared responsibility. By working together to navigate the issue, you create an environment where all parties feel heard and valued.
Ultimately, maintaining your composure, identifying the problem, and fostering collaborative solutions can transform challenges into opportunities for growth and connection.
I hope these tips help us maintain our cool and cause fewer eye rolls 😉.
