Mount Samat: The Legacy of Bataan Heroes

By Bianca Marie France E. Viadan

Mount Samat is a mountain found in the town of Pilar Bataan with the highest point of 555 meters or 1,821 ft above sea level where its parasitic cone shape is from the accumulation of volcanic material formed on the side of Mount Mariveles, a dormant stratovolcano that is also the highest point of Bataan Province.

This mountain is most famous for its historical shrine “Dambana ng Kagitingan” or widely known as the Shrine of Valor where a memorial cross was erected near the edge of the crater rim with a height of 95 meters or 312 ft from the base with each arm measuring 15 meters or 49 ft on each side, making it the second tallest cross in the world.

The Historical Shrine was built to remember and honor the valor and sacrifice of Filipino and American who fought against the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II where they retreated to Bataan to regroup and to make their final stronghold in Mount Samat. After enduring a relentless fight from January to April 1942, the Filipino and American Soldiers fell in the hands of Japanese Army and became prisoners of war who endured the Bataan Death March and the fall of Bataan, one of the most significant events in Philippine wartime history. Despite the hardships and unimaginable suffering and sacrifice, the soldiers of the Bataan Death March embodied unwavering courage and patriotism, a testament to the strong spirit who fought for freedom.

In the present, Mount Samat is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Philippines were history and nature perfectly blends. The shrine is a must-visit, where visitors can have a solemn experience as they honor the soldiers’ bravery. However, aside from Mount Samat’s historical significance, it is also a natural haven because arriving on the summit means breathtaking views of the Bataan Peninsula, Manila Bay, and the Zambales Mountains that attract nature enthusiasts such as hikers, trekkers, and photographers. But if you prefer more relaxed experiences, picnic grounds, gardens, local eateries and viewing spots can also be found during scenic drives. You can also drop by at The Bataan World War II Museum located at the back of Balanga Elementary School.

For those who have walked the historic grounds and scenic landscapes of Bataan or are planning to, Mount Samat is much more than a tourist destination, it’s a place of reflection, hope, and inspiration for future generations. Whether you’re drawn by its historical significance or its natural beauty, may you leave with a deep sense of pride and gratitude for the brave heroes who sacrificed their lives to ensure the peace and freedom they fought to secure.

13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians Chapter 5 Verse 13-14
