Q2 LEAD Talks: Empathize by Listening to the Team

By Rosy S. Santos

NLEX Corporation prioritizes the growth and development of its future leaders. One way of doing this is through LEAD Talks, one of NLEX Corporation’s people programs that aims to inspire leaders by the sharing of our management committee member’s personal, career, and leadership stories and experiences. This program fosters a sense of connection and authenticity, allowing participants to see NLEX leaders not just as high-ranking officers, but as individuals who have grown through experience.

Ms. Hasmin Co, fondly known as Jas, Compliance and Business Excellence (CBE) – Assistant Vice President, is the LEAD Speaker for the second quarter with the topic Empathize by Listening to the Team. The talk was held last June 14 at FYM Seafood Restaurant Valenzuela attended by seventeen future leaders of NLEX.

The program started by getting to know where Ms. Jas asked our participants about the music, song, or sound that the participants love listening to. Some of them answered that they are into worship songs, OPM, classical, and rock music.

During the session, Ms. Jas emphasized the importance of asking your team the question, “How are you?” and listening intently to their reply. As leaders, you should know how to decipher the responses. She also pointed out the value of sympathy versus empathy:

From her experiences, she also imparted practical tips on how leaders can show empathy to their team members:

Leaders practicing empathy through listening to their team greatly impact the company’s working environment. It encourages open communication, where team members feel safe expressing their ideas and challenges. Employees will feel that they are heard and valued. Even if you are not yet a leader, everyone should start listening to their team.
