Every time motivation at work is mentioned, my first manager’s impact still resonates. 25 years ago, I received a gift that would define the trajectory of my career: my first job. I was hired as Quality Assurance Supervisor in a chemical manufacturing company and was exposed to all facets of the business. My manager saw the potential, nurtured that through coaching, and when the timing was right, trusted me to lead a major project – ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certification of the company. In 1 year, we bagged the certification with zero NC. At 22, I made a legacy, delivered beyond expectations…because I felt trusted, supported, and empowered throughout the journey. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Now, I’m paying it forward.
It’s an open secret. Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs says that deep down, every person has a desire to become the best that they can possibly be. We as leaders can help them realize that by giving them opportunities, inspiring them with our words and actions, and creating a culture of accountability, autonomy, and fairness. We need to foster a working environment where our people feel seen, heard and inspired to contribute and grow – where ideas flow freely, they’re allowed to take calculated risks, and a growth mindset thrives within the team.
Apart from the usual coaching, performance and personal conversations and allowing them to participate as members or leaders in company projects and activities, this year we started the ‘mini-PM’s wherein each department has their own program/project to lead, plan, execute, and monitor. I’m creating a team where they own up to small but relevant projects on top of their duties and ministerial tasks. The goal is to improve their leadership skills in handling small teams, planning, analytical thinking, and presentation skills. Though we’re still at the initial stage of this endeavor, I already sensed enthusiasm, witnessed their competitive spirit, saw their individuality flourish, and was amazed by their creative ideas. I’m glad that we’re off to a great start, and I’m excited to see where this will take us.
As leaders, we have the power to ignite potential, fuel passion, and unleash greatness. Let’s believe in others even when they don’t believe in themselves, and empower them to become the remarkable individuals they hope to be.
